A hair stylist and wig expert in film, television and theatre, Debra Jean Johnson brings her expertise to every project she works on. Best known for her award-winning expertise in period styling, avant garde creativity, and technical precision to detail and style, along with her ability to bring a team together in joyful camaraderie, she wins accolades from all who have worked with her. Debra began her career in a high end hair salon in Yorkville and now brings that same devotion to her conceptual work and strong professional abilities to the worldwide film and television community.

A prized member of any film or television crew, Debra has worked on productions for over 35 years, on a variety of different projects. Her complicated and exacting sense of detail and versatility can be seen in her recent television projects, DC Universe’s Titans, Disney’s Decendants 2, NBC’s 12 Monkeys. and on these celebrated films, Blindness with Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Danny Glover; Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal and Isabella Rossellini; and A Home at the End of the World with Colin Farrell, Dallas Roberts, and Robin Wright. Debra’s skill and professionalism is on full display especially when she encounters challenging and highly creative projects, bringing her strong and unique understanding in creating and perfecting period hair styles and wigs from biblical to contemporary time frames.

Having been trained in London, England at the Vidal Sassoon Academy, and worked and studied wig creation and design at the famed Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Debra’s methodology and craftsmanship distinguishes her from her peers and coworkers.  She has won a 2002 Gemini Award for Best Hair and Make-up for the Rhombus Media film, Elizabeth Rex and nominated for both a Guild Award for the Fox television special, Rocky Horror Picture Show in 2016, and a Canadian Screen Award for Rhombus Media/Buffalo Girls film,Hyena Road in 2014. One would also be hard pressed not to see her wig expertise on full display in John Cameron Mitchell’s glam rock musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Long Day’s Journey Into Night with Martha Henry and Bill Hutt, and CBC’s Strange Empire.

Always the team player, she has a strong ability to lead and invigorate all around her through positivity and innovation, making those long working days that film and television asks of their crew easier and more enjoyable. She is dedicated to her craft and loves and embraces the fast-paced and challenging environment that her work brings.
